Newport RI Fishing Charters

Tall Tailz Charters is based out of Newport Rhode Island. We’ve been fishing these waters for over 20 years and know where, when and how to get you on the fish. Newport is the tourism capitol of Rhode Island and the yachting capitol of the northeast. With incredible structure, bottom contour and coastal scenery Newport is the perfect city to operate our fishing charters from. We really have two entirely different waters to fish, Narragansett Bay and Newport’s ocean front. Both offer excellent opportunities to make your fishing charter special. The bay holds trophy striped bass during the spring months while providing a sheltered refuge on wind-blown days. The coastal waters off Newport are home to a variety of unique structure, making it a deep-sea fishing hot spot. We have both soft and rocky bottom with deep drops, shallow ledges, humps, reefs, rips and various breaks. This makes Newport a prime destination for multiple species that swim these waters, a charter fishing dream!

What fish can I catch in Newport Rhode Island?

The most popular species we target on our charter are striped bass, bluefish, tautog, fluke, seabass and scup. During the fall our options open even wider as other seasonal species like bonito and false albacore enter our waters. Tautog fishing off Newport is best in late spring and fall. These toothy pigs spend most of their time in the rocks munching on hard shell crustaceans. Tautog are a favorite to catch because of their bullish fights and hard attitudes. Striped bass and bluefish are probably our two most popular species to target. You can generally catch them together on live bait or artificial lures. These fish are considered our top inshore big game species. Striped bass and bluefish charters make up a good percentage of our fishing charters and are plentiful for most of the season.

How is the bottom fishing in Newport Rhode Island?

Drift bottom fishing is another style of fishing charter that we offer here in Newport. Generally, the species we target are fluke, sea bass and scup. We will jig up some strange bi catches on occasion; such as sea robin, lizadfish, oyster toad fish, choggies or mums and even triggerfish. On a fluke fishing charter, we try to maintain a steady drift of at least 3/4 kt or so and try to work bottom contour that changes from soft to hard. Depths can vary depending on season and water temps. These flatfish put up a great fight and have become an excellent option for a bottom fishing charter. Black sea bass can be caught as bi-catch while fluke fishing or targeted separately. These fish are a ton of fun to catch especially with the kids! They seem to be just about everywhere and are always a welcomed site. There are many inshore options available on your Newport fishing charter.

Can I catch bonito and false albacore in Newport Rhode Island?

Late summer and fall are great times to book a fishing charter.  Striped bass and bluefish are in full swing, bottom fishing is great, tautog season reopens, but most importantly our seasonal hard tail visitors begin to show up off Newport. Bonito generally arrive first as mass amounts of bait begin to move through. A few weeks later the false albacore show up. When these guests of Newport make their appearance, almost everyone out fishing is looking to hook up with them. They both put up an amazing fight on light tackle spinning gear and on the fly. This style of fishing is known as “run and gun” because they are only up on the surface feeding periodically and you must move quickly to keep yourself in casting range. These fishing charters off Newport are extremely popular and for good reason.
