Tall Tailz Fishing Charters

built for success

Fishing is our life. Our mission is to provide an exceptional “on the water” service like no other. It starts with research and preparation. We’re constantly examining and maintaining our gear, studying charts, trying new techniques and keeping a watchful eye on whats happening in the fishing community. This gives us key advantages before ever stepping foot on the boat. Once we’re on board we have everything set up for optimal success. We fish with only the best equipment on the market and customized the boat specifically for the angler. The most important part of the equation is of course, hard work. We fish hard, every day mother nature allows. This way we always know where the fish are and how they’re biting. With proper preparation, the right gear and a strong work ethic we’re able to provide our customers with an amazing saltwater experience! Did you know Paul Newman caught the Rhode Island State Record for tautog in 2021? Well now you do!

Newport RI Fishing Charters

The Rhode Island saltwater fishery is arguably the best in the North East and along most of the east coast. At Tall Tailz Charters we try to utilize all that these waters have to offer. We take pride in offering the highest quality fishing charters in all of Rhode Island and New England. Our season typically starts at the end of April and slows down in the end of November. We offer inshore fishing charters as well as nearshore and offshore fishing charters. The beauty of Rhode Island fishing is our versatility. For our inshore Rhode Island fishing charters, we can fish along our southern coast off Little Compton, Newport and Narragansett.  When the weather kicks up we can head North to the protected waters of Narragansett Bay and the Sakonnet River. This unique dynamic keeps us fishing nearly every day, all season long. The inshore game is only one piece of Rhode Island fishing charters. There is also amazing nearshore and offshore fishing to be had. The offshore fishing is weather and sea temperature dependent. Most of the pelagic species roll in with the warmer waters of the gulf stream. We’ll venture offshore anytime from June-October.

What fish can you catch in Rhode Island?

Captain of Tall Tailz Charters, Connor MacLeod, is an expert fishing the inshore waters here in Rhode Island. Here we can target species like tautog, fluke, black sea bass, scup, striped bass, bluefish, squid, mackerel, bonito and false albacore. Our charter fishing season starts in late April to beginning of May with our long-awaited friends, Tautog.

Where can I fish for tautog in Rhode Island?

Tautog fishing is generally nonstop action and we catch them only a short ride from the dock in Newport RI. They can be caught all along our southern coast and inside Narragansett Bay. Tautog, AKA Blackfish are known as the bull dogs of the ocean because of their intense fights and stubborn personality. These fishing charters are a Rhode Island favorite. As the weather warms up and the bay temperature climbs into the 60’s well begin to see Rhode Island’s most sought after fish, the striped bass.

Where can I fish for striped bass in Rhode Island?

Generally, striped bass start arriving in mid may in Narragansett Bay and stay in Rhode Island waters in abundance until November. From Providence to Newport to Block Island Rhode Island is considered the mecca for striped bass. About 80% of our trips target striped bass, clearly a charter fishing favorite! Frequently mixed in with striped bass and often caught together are bluefish. These fish can be very aggressive and are known for savagely attacking artificial baits. We specialize in light tackle fishing and the bluefish is a perfect match for our style. If the bite is slow or we simply want to switch it up we can target fluke, black sea bass and scup at a number of bottom fishing locations. These fish can be caught one after another and make for an excellent fight and table fare. In the late summer through fall we offer a special type of fishing charter, called “run and gun”. Every year seasonal hard tail species like bonito, false albacore and Spanish mackerel fill our waters in pursuit of the abundant amount of bait. These fish school up and feed on the surface and move constantly. They put up an excellent fight on light tackle! Because of this we have to constantly move the boat. Have a rod in your hand and your feet anchored to the deck because Rhode Island run and gun fishing can be extreme!

Nearshore and offshore charter fishing is our personal favorite here at Tall Tailz Charters. We typically do between one and two dozen nearshore fishing trips a year and a handful of offshore fishing trips. The term nearshore means the area of ocean between the inshore and offshore grounds. This is usually 20 to 40 nautical miles from Rhode Island. What you can expect to catch on these fishing charters is primarily sharks and tuna with additional pelagics in the mix.

Where can I fish for sharks in Rhode Island?

Our shark fishing charters are what get us out here the most. We love shark fishing. We’ll typically get mako sharks, thresher sharks, porbeagles and blue sharks. With the advancement in technology we can now catch these toothy monsters using nothing but spinning gear. This light tackle approach is way more fun and sport oriented then the old school approach of hand cranking on heavy conventional gear. Mako and thresher sharks can be exceptionally fun to catch as they are known to jump clear out of the water and put on incredible acrobatic feats.

Where can I fish for Tuna in Rhode Island?

Along with shark fishing charters on the nearshore grounds, we also target Tuna and other pelagics. Generally, the species we’ll encounter are Bluefin Tuna, Mahi Mahi, White Marlin, Jacks and Triggerfish. The bluefin tuna we’ll come across are typically school to large sized fish. We’ll target these fish by jigging, casting, chunking or trolling. You never know what to expect on a nearshore Rhode Island fishing charter.

Offshore Rhode Island fishing charters are not for the beginner. We book for offshore trips but only go when we know the weather is going to be excellent. This type of fishing is better known as north east canyon fishing. The canyons are about 100 nautical miles from Rhode Island. This is known as “the edge” where the continental shelf begins to drop off and the gulf stream runs parallel. We get a large temperature break on the edge of the gulf stream which creates amazing fishing opportunities. Out here is where you can truly have a world class fishing experience you’ll never forget. The gulf stream brings with it a ton of southern pelagic species. Here we’ll primarily focus on yellowfin tuna, big eye tuna, white and blue marlin, swordfish, mahi mahi and wahoo. There’s so much to see and do at the canyons it really is like a saltwater adventure park. You will see whales, dolphins, sea turtles, sharks and birds you’ve never seen before. We will troll for all of the species named as well as heavy chunking, jigging and popping. We can high speed troll for wahoo and spin cast to floating debris and weedlines for mahi mahi. There’s so much to do and see on these offshore fishing charters.

At Tall Tailz Charters we know how lucky we are to be able to fish such an amazing fishery in Rhode Island. From inshore to nearshore to offshore, there’s nothing you won’t find in a Rhode Island fishing charter. Our charter boat is customized to suit the angler. We’ve thought about every aspect of a fishing trip and tailored the boat to make the anglers experience a special one. With Tall Tailz Charters you’re guaranteed to have a good time on your fishing charter. We take pride in offering the best service possible and sharing our love of fishing with you.
